Kites On Ayr Beach

At last some more sun today. Just on cue a chance to take photos on the beach. Dozens of kite boarders surfing in the shallows. Some sort of competition.

I've not had such a good time taking photos in a while. Completely engrossed. My Fuji X100 never left my hand. The Nikon stayed in the bag.  Pre-focused with a big depth of field. The 35mm equivalent lens meaning I was up close, right amongst the kites.

I don't have the lenses to reach the competitors on the water.

Had a good chat with Scott, Wendy and the boys who happened to parked near my car.

Maureen's Farewell from Supply Chain

Effectively Maureen's last week in Erskine before moving to work for Services in the UK Sub.

Many war stories from people in the room and on the phone. Excellent food cooked and supplied by Catherine and Moira.

Charlie "The Bard" Docherty provided the rhyming insight.

Adriatic Cruise: Venice, Italy

Jean was up like a shot at 6am for the docking in Venice. The ship passed St Mark's Square and over looked the main sites of the city.

From Adriatic2011

We had been to the city before so decided to view the glass and lace making areas of Murano and Burano. None of the majestic building of the main city but worker housing brightly coloured.

From Adriatic2011

Jean returned to St Mark's later to see what the atmosphere was like when the majority of the tourists had evacuated the city.

Adriatic Cruise: A Day at Sea

Today was a day of eating. Could not stop. Breakfast, 11 o'clock, lunch, 3 o'clock, dinner and snack before bed!! We only missed out on the BBQ at pool side.

From Adriatic2011

As everyone was on the ship all facilities were jammed. Sun loungers were at a premium. As we were initially in the shade our search was easier.

Adriatic Cruise: Dubrovnik, Crotia

We decided to take the shuttle bus into the old town and do out own thing today.

From Adriatic2011

I was surprised at the architecture and landscape of the area. It looked more Italian than Bari! No beaches and steep cliffs around the town.

We walked up to the cable car station and took a ride to the top of the hill above the old town. The cooler temperature was very welcome. On the way up the many steps to the cable car Jean was in a bad way. Looking very red!!!

Back down for an ice cream. Earlier we had stopped at a cafe which the tour guides used,  a good recommendation. Milk shake, cake and cappuccino in a cool alleyway recharged our batteries.

Adriatic Cruise: Ravenna, Italy

Our first excursion to view the famous mosaics of Revenna.

From Adriatic2011

Had a guided tour of several churches in the town with walls covered in the finest mosaics. Many covered in gold leave.

Also passed by Dantes mausoleum.

We had plans to say in the town and have a walk round other sites. Again the heat put a stop to further exertions.

Adriatic Cruise: Bari, Italy

The sail back to Italy meant the we did not arrive until 11am today. We spend the morning in a minor bout of sunbathing - but more than enough for us in +30C heat.

Like the most of the Mediterranean lunch is a 2 hour shutdown. The recommendation was to wait until 3pm to leave the ship. By that time the prospect of tramping around  another small town was not sounding a great idea. We retired to the Windjammer for an air conditioned lunch. Serious eating on the cruise had started!!!

We did book an excursion into Ravenna for the following day.

Adriatic Cruise: Koper, Slovenia

An over night sail to Koper. A small town east of Venice. We were docked in the  harbour which was very near the town centre, just across a minor road.

From Adriatic2011

The town had arranged a small tourist market in the central square. It was not a large place and a gentle stroll got us back to the ship in the early afternoon.

Cruising The Adriatic: Venice

Today our cruise started at Venice on The Voyage of the Seas.

From Adriatic2011

A long day starting with a 6am flight from Glasgow, check in 4:30. As it was a charter flight for Royal Caribbean there was no on-line check-in!

We were on board by lunch time. Just in time to experience an 'all you can eat' lunch in the Windjammer restaurant. Everyone was in the same position so the place was organised chaos as a ship load of passengers tried to find seating.

Spent the afternoon discovering what was on offer on the ship. We booked dinner for 6:30 so missed the sail out of Venice at 7pm.

Plum Jam

Jean has made some excellent plum jam. Only 3 jars in stock. They will not last long.

Our latest cook cook is on Mexican food. Already tried out the salsa using burnt toms and chillies -- great. The slow cooked chicken is in the oven for tomorrow's dinner.

After work in the garden taking in the last of the sun. Should have cut the lawn...... no chance. Reading and dozing in the warmth is a better deal.

At Last A Summer Weekend

Great weekend. Not the absolute hottest but certainly warm enough for shorts and reading the papers in the morning sun. During the afternoon most of the kids of the street were in our garden.

After all the high tech games that they are now used to making a tent out of towels, sheets and pegs kept them amused for hours.

Visit To Durham

Took a trip from Darlington to Durham today.

Found the park and ride just off the A1(M) far better than scrambling for parking nearer the City.

From 2011

The weather was not that good and heavy showers came rolling in. We dived into Cafe Nero instead of our intended walk along the river.

From 2011

We were back in Darlington to collect Ethan from school in the middle of a down pour.

And finally a bedtime story with Ethan.

Ann and Geoff's 40th Anniversary & Ann's 60th Birthday

Ann and Geoff booked Bistro 21 at Durham for a celebration dinner for the whole family. A big thank you for your generosity.  The meal was unbelievably good!!! Our lamb was perfectly cooked, with a beautiful pink colour in the centre.  Everyone was having a good time with plenty of laughter around the room. The 5 hours to midnight flew by.

The kids were very well behaved , a credit to their parents.

ps - Sorry Laura you got out voted on the photo list - its still a good photo you rejected.

Centre Parc 2011

We had our annual trip to Centre Parcs at Whinfell Forest. Weather forecast was not great but the worst of the rain occurred  during out last morning. So I only had one wet bike seat to contend with!

It was Andrews's birthday so we had the essential chocolate cake when the Darlo gang arrived later in the evening.

Jean's Birthday

It did not start well with Jean having forgotten that she had thrown all the birthday banners out. We had no milk, eggs and worst of all -- no candles.

Today was the warmest of the year and with the nights stretching out Erin and Rhys managed their first dive on the garden swings.

Here's a few photos:

Erin's 9th Birthday

Erin's 10th Year

Erin's 9th Birthday celebrated with Ann's sisters and niece. By request a Chinese take away was consumed. Particularly chicken balls!!!

Erin did manage to play her new Nintendo DS  the whole time. The bike would be for milder weather.
